In a steamer, stem green beans for about 8 to 10 minutes.
Meanwhile in a large skillet heat olive oil. Add the onions and mushrooms. Sautee for about 10 minutes, until mostly caramelized.
Add the garlic and cook for 1 to 2 minutes more.
Place the cooked green beans in a large pot over medium low heat. Add the mushroom mix and butter. When the butter melts, add the balsamic vinegar, soy sauce and spices. Heat through. Serve
