There’s a neat trick you can use to save your sauce. Mix two spoons of water and one spoon of corn starch in a bowl. Add this mixture to the sauce while it simmers in order to thicken it up. Be sure to slowly add the starch solution to your sauce until you achieve the desired thickness.

Tomatoes can be easily dried. You can do this by cutting ripe tomatoes into 1/2 inch thick slices, or by cutting Roma tomatoes in half lengthwise. Place them cut-side up on a rack that you use for cooling, and add a little salt. Next, the tomatoes need to spend about 10 hours in an oven set to 190 degrees. Put a cookie sheet under the rack before it goes in. The dried tomatoes can be put in plastic bags and frozen. Another way to preserve your dried tomatoes is in olive oil, with herbs for added flavor, in a glass jar. Use them within two weeks of refrigerating.

When boiling water to cook pasta, be sure to add a generous sprinkling of salt. This allows the salt to be absorbed by the pasta. Adding salt after the pasta is cooked will cause the flavor to not be absorbed as well.

Take care of your wood cutting board. Your cutting board can split or warp if it is exposed to excessive moisture, heat, or extreme dryness. If you have to clean your cutting board, use a sponge rather than immersing it in soapy water. If you need to restore a board that is damaged, regularly apply an oil that is formulated for wooden cutting boards. Be sure to let your cutting board dry completely before you use it again.

Pick a place that will not compromise the quality of your cooking spices; try somewhere that is non-humid and light free. Spices can quickly lose their flavors when exposed to heat, light and humidity. This will overexpose your spices to heat and cause them to lose flavor.

Do not overcook or undercook your cake. The recommendations on the package are only guidelines, because many factors, including oven variations, can impact the finished product. A good way to judge whether a cake is finished is by sticking a toothpick into the center of the cake. If it removes cleanly, it’s done; if batter is on it, it needs longer to bake.

Get out the cooking oil when measuring sticky foods. Use an oil that has little flavor, like canola; Before you measure, coat the spoon lightly with this oil, and the sticky ingredient will easily slide off from the spoon. This will prevent waste and will make clean up easier. This works well for peanut butter and honey too.

Consider mixing flavored butter for a simple method of adding some additional flavor to your corn or rolls. Soften the butter in the microwave, or leave it on the kitchen counter for a while. Next, mix in spices, sauces or herbs to create a burst of new flavors. Barbeque sauce is good, so is honey or lemon juice.

So using the tips and hints that have been provided here, you should now be much more confident about your cooking abilities. With improved culinary skills, not only will you eat better, the people around you will eat better as well. You may be the next Julia Child.
